jacob zuma - well on this day august the 5th - it is definitely the president of the anci don’t want to get involved with the debate about mr zuma’s law suit.  is it right or wrong or should it go on or not?  is he guilty or is it a conspiracy?  i don’t know - i do not thing that anyone know the exact truth, but mr zuma himself.

one thing i do want to say and that is that mr zuma is in such a powerful position with so much influence.  i really hope he realizes this and i hope he uses it well.  our country is in desperate need for leaders with influence who will stand up for what is right and for what is needed in this country.  we don’t need a war hero - we have past that phase.  we need someone who can bring people together and take them all forward. i hope you can do that for our country mr zuma.

and as a side note i would like to remind all leaders with huge influences that time is ticking away.  your actions today will echo thru eternity.  even if you do nothing.  previous leaders in this country have showed us what not to do and other like president mandela has shown us what to do.  to forgive and forget, to have a heart for the people, to lead with love and integrity.  to build a south africa, where all south africans - born of this country - can strive to become a nation that shows the world how to build up a nation that can be leaders in all fields.

the difference between good and great - good = you as individual realizes the truth and start living it.  great = you get the people to do all the right things, yes to live the truth.

be challenged to lead…..

the dark knight

i guess a lot has been said about the new batman movie.  the wife and i went to see it the day it came out.  i must say - well done to heath ledger - scary sometimes, but really a job well done.  he brought the joker to a new level.

it is interesting however that our hero, batman is having a mid-life crisis.  i guess heroes also have bad days.

i think it is the same in real life - we all are somebody’s hero.  your son, your wife, your mother or your friend and sometimes we forget that all of us are just human beings.  and yes sometimes, even heroes have bad days.  well may we all rise to the occasion and figure out our heroic place in society.

so if you are old enough this is one you do not want to miss.

ps…

since i love figures it is pretty amazing to see the stats on how much money the movie made.  breaking the record several times.  watch out titanic - we might have a new winner soon - breaking $601 million will be tough, but possible - lets see what happen.

i find it difficult to agree with our national rugby’s team coach, pieter de villiers - by sending francois and ruan away from the springbok squad.  i hope he has good reason for his choice, let’s hope it is his choice.  i guess he does.  anyway - i still not agree with the man.  francois will surely be missed. so good luck to the bocks on saturday.  let’s make madiba’s day

grace,mercy and ……

so, last week one of our team members was diagnosed with cancer.  it was a shock to all of us.  i mean, he is only 20 years of age.  all of a sudden all sorts of questions pop up, because we cannot wrap our minds around something like this.  and what makes it even more difficult for a group of people – everybody handles the shock differently.  this one cries, this one shouts, this one doubts, the other one just keep quiet.  and it made me think – where is god in all of this?  when everything is good, we easily say “god is so good”, but when the going gets tough, we might doubt god or we might ask for healing and when it doesn’t happen, we look for answers.

i’m sure there are a lot of situations out there like the one we have, or slightly different, another disease, a high-jacking, a rape, a theft or even a flood.  a lot of bad things happen in this life and most of us look to god, the god of the universe, and we ask questions.  and when the answer doesn’t come the way we want it, we bail.  and you might say, yeah peter what do you know?  your best friend wasn’t rape, or your family member wasn’t murdered or you didn’t lose your mother to cancer?  maybe, maybe not, i know we all experience things differently and to cope with life and the understanding of god we all react in a different way.  that is normal, because we are different individuals and you are allowed to ask, fight and do whatever.

within this all i personally was just reminded that even though i don’t always understand, or get the right answers for my questions, i can always come with confidence to god.  and even if god is still a mystery, i will always receive mercy and find grace to help me thru whatever comes my way.

hope you find it too.

xenophobia in south africa

while i am resting at my home – i took a few days off – other people are being chased out of their homes and out of the country.  not even 100km from me, people fear for their lives, because of the recent xenophobic attacks.  it really breaks my heart that after thousands of years and with the history of the world on wars and violence, we as human beings have still not realized that such violence will bring us nowhere.  it will only destroy.

it doesn’t matter how you look at it – and i know there are a lot of different opinions about foreigners in our country – you cannot in any way approve of it.  it is wrong, just wrong and the sad part of it is it’s almost always the innocent that suffers.  where is the love man, where has it gone?

i think love is hiding with our president.  mr.thabo mbeki.   nothing against you sir, but i really think that our country needed to see more of you during this time.  unfortunately they did not.  everything rises and falls on leadership – the country should have seen you when these attacks on innocent people started.

let us all think of the innocent people being robbed of the right to basic needs.  no matter where you’re from – no one has to suffer like this.

real men follow jesus

real men follow jesus - was the bumper sticker i saw on the back of a big bakkie (suv) a couple of days ago.  since then i have been thinking about that statement and about the public display of such a statement.

my first thought was - what is the reaction of the world?  especially non-christians.  if i was a non-christian i would immediately think - well does that mean, because i don’t follow jesus, i’m not a real man.  i’m sure the person who created the sticker did not intend to proclaim that some people, a lot of people are not real men.  maybe the creator of this sticker really felt the urge to scream to the world what he believes.  nothing wrong with that - i’m just asking the question - was this the testimony god wanted us to be? we do a lot of things, but sometimes we forget that the world is watching and they are waiting for opportunities to mock, break down and criticize jesus and his followers.  what the world knows and experiences about jesus, they know and experience thru his followers.  and we as his followers have to remember that.  non-believers have not had the wonderful experiences we’ve had - those experiences that you can’t explain to someone else.

i’m not saying stop sharing your testimony - but look at your ways of doing it.

maybe our testimonies should be more applicable to those who are in desperate need of the truth.  you wouldn’t give a 7 year old a 900 page book on ground engineering.  you get my point.  know your market.  putting such a sticker on your car is maybe winning you points with other christians, but not with the secular working class of south africa.

asking questions - what’s in your suitcase?

Posted on April 11th, 2008 by Piet.
Categories: my thoughts.

if the disciples knew who they were really walking with for more than 3 years, they would have ask more and better questions, well that is what i think.  last night at reverb - check www.reverberate.co.za- we started a new series on “what’s that smell - discovering gods odorour spiritual life/journeys were illustrated as a travelling suitcase and what we believe we put into the suitcase.  and then we meet people and we hit them over the head with our suitcases, because we want them to believe what we believe.

anyway, i don’t want to repeat the whole sermon, but in the end we spoke about the things you put into your suitcase.  and that we need to do some unpacking from time to time.  because as our journey continues we need more essentials.  this brings us to the point of asking questions - not to doubt, but more to get deeper into the truth.  the more questions, the more answers, the more right questions, with the right attitude, the more right answers.packing and unpacking - evaluating, asking, seeking.  and it looks different for all of us.  our journeys differ.  let us share the good about our journeys, let us comfort each other about the not so good of our journey, let’s ask the right questions.

if by asking a right question everyday leads to understanding more about a complex god and his truth, then i say “let’s start today, because our lives are too short.

how many questions have you ask?

in 13thfloor we have 2 touring teams.  each team has 40 people and is led by a tour leader and 7 management members.  last night we took them - the management - out for dinner to thank them for their hard work.  it was a wonderful event.  it is amazing to see young people who are committed and have a passion in their hearts to see the youth of this country change.

here is to the mc’s of the reds and blues.  may you go from strength to strength within this year.  good luck
